Visiting Granny and Grandpa is so much fun. It's a trip! Actually it was a trip from New Mexico to New Jersey.
Treska boarded a plane in Denver, Colorado for a four and a half hour flight. Of course, it was delayed both on the ground and in the air, so it took a lot longer. When she finally arrived at Newark Liberty Airport I met her at the gate. I couldn't believe she was here and I was going to have her visit "all by herself" for two weeks. YEAH!!!! Her mom and dad and sister, Kaya, would come later. |
|
|
Life away from home is soooooooo different. Besides going to the swimming pool and New York City, we just hang around doing . . . well, ordinary, normal things.

GOING to the CHIROPRACTOR |
|
|
 | Treska & Grandpa
hanging out in the
Chiropractor's Office |
| | | Dr. Lou Schimmel
is working on Grandpa.
Looks like it hurts, but
Grandpa says that it doesn't.
It helps him to stand up better
so he can learn to walk again. |
|
| | |
| David has to go to the chiropractor three times a week and so Treska and I go with him. We go to The Chiropractic Center at Styertown. Dr. Lou Schimmel is his chiropractor. He cracks his back and stretches him. He is really adjusting his spine to help him stand up straighter and to help with his balance. We think it's helping him too! |

RIDING the SUBWAY and a PEEK into CHINATOWN |

Riding the "A" Train |
|
| | |
| We only had a half hour, so Treska and I jumped off of the train and dashed around Canal Street -- in and out of all the little store-fronts. A half hour is just enough time to find matching rings . . . a good reminder of all of our wonderful memories of the weeks she spent with me and her grandfather in NJ/NY. |

 | Treska eating ice cream
-- way too much ice cream --
delicious Oreo Mint Blizzard
Yum! Yum!
It was good!
All the way to the very last drop. |
| | | Then she started to twirl
as
the sugar swirled through |
| | | I'm not twirling!
This is "perfectly" normal. |
|
 | Slow Down
Yikes! I'm going too fast.
Time for a break.
Don't worry -- I'll be back. |
| | | How do you like this "DO"?
See what wonderful,
delicious,
wild,
crazy,
ice cream can do?
I suggest you try it too.
:)
|
| | | Maybe we'll get some ice cream
again
tomorrow night?
"Ya think"? |

|
 | Put all the ingredients in.
Stir it up! |
| | | | THIS is going to be GOOD! |
|
 | Mmmmmm . . .
Smells Good! |
| | | Almost done.
Can't wait. |
| | | Now this is what I
call a good dinner. |
|
| | |
MAKING DINNER
"I can cook. I really can," said Treska as we walked through the grocery store. "Can I? Can I?" Then she started to list all the ingredients she needed to make Breakfast Burritos . . . potatoes, eggs, onions, tomatoes and lettuce . . . and don't forget cheese and tortillas and sour cream, AND salsa. We tossed all the ingredients into our cart. We had a date in the kitchen the next afternoon. We were going to have Breakfast Burritos for dinner. Sounded like a good plan to me.
She pulled out the skillet and all the ingredients, threw the potatoes into the food processor . . . next went the onions . . . then the cheese. Shred them all. Crack and stir the eggs. Dice the tomatoes and toss them into the egg mixture. Fry up the potatoes into hash browns and fry the eggs. Don’t forget to clean up along the way. Then plop some of each mixture onto the tortillas, wrap, dollop with sour cream and salsa and . . . YUM!
That girl is a good cook!

Behind me you can see

Did you know that polar bears
live on the shores of the
ARCTIC OCEAN?
Maybe this one is a wee bit confused.
The Erie Zoo is on the shores of
Lake Erie.

PIEROGHI-MAKING TIME with GREAT NANA |
|
|
 | Making PIEROGHIS with Great-Nana is so much fun.
We mix the dough. Roll it out. Fill with cabbage, lekvar,
(that's prune jelly) cottage cheese, or apricot jelly.
Next pinch the edges together and set on a dry cloth.
Then boil the pieroghis, fry in some butter and eat!
YUM!!!!
That's my sister, Kaya, and my Grand-Aunt Judy with me.
|
| | | | Roll, roll, roll the dough! |
|
 | | Shake that rolling pin. |
| | | Look at these pieroghis.
Don't they look great? |

 | Dragon Land Bakery
They had so many rolls and doughnuts.
They
ALL
looked
good.
Some were better than others. |
| | | These are Chinese ornaments with red tassles. They can be hung in your home or in your car.
People think that it brings good 'chi'. I think that means good luck or good health. Anyway I hope I get a LOT of good luck and good health by standing in front of them.
Some of the ornaments have boats on them or dragons. Some have lanterns and some have fish. |
| | | Look at these great purses.
I bought 15 of them for all
of my friends back home.
I hope they like them. It took me a LONG
time to pick them out. I wanted a different
one for each of my friends. |
|
 | We had lunch at the Tasty Dumpling.
Vegetable Dim Sum with lots of soy sauce.
AND
Hot Sesame Noodles
I never used chopsticks before.
That was really tricky -- especially
eating the noodles. |
| | | I couldn't resist hanging on the
monkey bars at Columbus Park. |
|
| | |
We spent another day in Chinatown - a very interesting place. We rode the subway from 168th and Broadway and got off on Canal Street again. We popped into the first jewelry store. They had rings and earrings and necklaces and bracelets. I wanted them all!
Then we went to the Dragon Land Bakery. There were rows and rows of sweat treats. It was so hard to choose. I finally chose a cheese roll.
We poked around in just about every shop on Canal Street and on Mulberry Street and on Doyers Street and Mott Street. The shops were so colorful. They had hand-embroidered hand bags, and Chinese blouses and slippers in every color. They had hairclips and scarves. It was a delight for your eyes.
I wanted to bring my friends souvenirs from Chinatown. It was the perfect place to find something, but I wanted it to be something special. So, I searched and searched until I found perfect little purses. I had to find fifteen different ones for all the girls in my class.
That was HARD work, so we went to find some tasty dumplings at TASTY DUMPLING, of course. Eating those noodles was messy -- noodles dripping down my chin, vegetable dumplings falling off of my chop sticks. SPLAT splashing soy sauce!
Then it was off to the playyard to slip down the slide and hang from the monkey bars.

MEET MY NEW FRIEND, MATTHEW |
|
|
 | Life is good!
Except when it isn't.
It's good now!
|
| | | | This is my friend, Matthew. |
| | | Treska and Matt met at the pool
only two days after she arrived.
They have been great friends ever since.
|
|
| | |
| One of the fun things about going to new places is meeting new friends. |
|
|
It's a GIRLY-GIRL DAY at the Nail Shop |
|
|
 | Treska feeling so grown up as she gets a manicure from Kevin.
A French manicure - no less. |
| | | | This is so cool. |
| | | | How do you like my new nails? |
|
| | |
| Off to the manicurist. But not just any manicure for Treska, she wanted a French manicure. |
|

HOP ON to the STATEN ISLAND FERRY |
|
|
 | This is the Staten Island Ferry.
The Staten Island Ferry is just about the
only thing in life that is FREE.
I know! I KNOW! I could hardly believe it, too!
A few years ago it cost 50¢.
Now it is FREE!

just a
BAD HAIR DAY! |
|
 | We're heading back to New York City now.
That's the Spirit Cruise in front of us.
You have to pay a lot of money to ride that boat. |
| | | See the cute, little Tug Boat.
It looks like a toy. |
|
 | I know you can't see me very well,
but doesn't the
CITY
look
pretty? |
| | | We even got to see the Statue of Liberty.
She's beautiful!
She is the symbol of freedom
for Americans
and many people around the world. |
|
 | Hey! There's another ferry.
I told you they cross the harbor all day
every half hour.
Maybe we'll take another ride. |
|
| | |
We decided to go to Staten Island for no particular reason at all, except it would be fun to take a ferry. Since it was a blisteringly hot day, it would also be rather cool, literally, to have the wind from the New York Harbor cool us off.
So we rode the subway from 168th Street to the base of Manhattan, the last stop on the subway line, to the Whitehall Terminal. The ferry boats leave every 30 minutes. So, if you wanted to, you could ride a ferry back and forth all day long. We didn't! We only rode once. But we had a picnic lunch in the terminal in Staten Island. That's because we missed the return ferry. We wanted to see if there was anywhere we could walk around - just to hang out for awhile, but there really wasn't. So we just ate our lunch and listened to some guy preach. He was carrying his bible and telling everyone they would be saved. It was weird because noone was listening to him, but that didn't stop him. I guess you can see just about anything in New York City uh, I mean Staten Island. |
|
|
This is a work in progress.
Treska visited us for two weeks and we did photo shoots everywhere.
You can expect to see a lot more here soon, but I wanted to open up the page before she went home.
So come back soon! Come back often!
There is a lot more to come. See you again!
